EXO-L upset over Gaon Chart's hypocrisy with album sales

EXO-L are upset with Gaon’s reporting of EXO’s physical album sales for EX’ACT.

Normally, Gaon would count separate album versions of the same title as one album (i.e. EXO-K and EXO-M versions of an album would just be an EXO album), but for EX’ACT, they counted the Korean and Chinese albums separately.

This caused EXO’s EX’ACT to rank 4th on the World’s 2016 Top First Week Albums Chart and rank 2nd on South Korea’s 2016 Top First Week Albums Chart.

Gaon gave an explanation saying that the bar codes were different on the albums, which is why they reported the album sales as separate… but that wasn’t what they used to do…

The thing is, when it came to other groups that had several versions of the same album, for example SEVENTEEN, Gaon counted all versions of their album as one. All of Seventeen’s albums had different bar codes too.

Fans are very upset with Gaon’s decision and hypocrisy.

Here’s all of the research and reactions to Gaon by EXO-L, translated by Aeriverse Translations Team; Yeyewalkways:

[PANN] A Currently Very Bewildered Fandom

Gaon Chart counts the sales of Chinese and Korean versions of EXO’s EX’ACT album separately. And that’s how we have the miracle of 4th Place on the World’s Top First Week Album Sales become 2nd Place on our country’s Top First Week Album Sales.

When the fans angrily asked why the versions were counted separately when it’s the same album in different languages, Gaon replied that the reason is because their product codes are different.

This is EX’ACT Korean Version.

As you can see, the product codes are different.

However if you look at SEVENTEEN’s album, which has 3 versions:
(I apologize if I upset any SEVENTEEN fans. I wrote this only intending to critique Gaon, I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with SEVENTEEN’s album)

As expected, the product codes are different. But Gaon counts all three different versions of SEVENTEEN’s albums as one.

There was also the case a while ago when Gaon counted different language versions of Super Junior’s album as one.

This is an explanation from Billboard about why the Korean, Chinese, and repackaged versions should be officially counted as one album.

I can’t understand why Gaon is applying their standard of “different versions should be counted separately” only to EXO. If they have a standard for other artists but use a different one for EXO, I can only think that this is discrimination against EXO.

“Honestly isn’t what Gaon doing the same as saying that the same movie with different captions are different movies? ㅋㅋㅋㅋ” [+54[+540][-10]

“So it’s really true that they’re trying to reduce EXO’s value ; I think this is the second time I’ve heard of something like this after Melon Music Awards” [+52[+526][-14]

“Seeing Gaon continue to not give us feedback, you can see with your own eyes that they really are just ignoring EXO and EXO-Ls” [+51[+512][-9]

“It’s not just that, Billboard even released a post explaining why the Korean, Chinese, repackaged versions are counted together ㅋㅋㅋ But when the nobody fandoms say that EXO are fake million-sellers! It’s so absurd ㅋㅋㅋ When their own groups make records they drag Billboard into it, when we show Billboard as evidence they say “this is Korea!” ㅋㅋㅋ …… It really makes no sense” [+18[+189][-3]download.jsp?FileID=40192275

“The whole world really is EXO’s playground….” [+17[+178][-2]

“I really can’t understand why people are ignoring EXO’s album sales, to be honest isn’t EXO the one who opened the doors for the 3rd generation with Growl and revived the physical album market?” [+16[+167][-2]

“Wow they’re on a different level, world’s top 1st week album sales 4th place…” [+14[+142][-1]

“The even funnier thing is when we asked Gaon for feedback, they confidently said that if we ask for the barcodes to be revealed then they would do it, but what’s the reason for not revealing them even after several months? Seriously whether it’s Gaon or it’s Melon, they’re both nasty” [+13[+136][-1]

“Do they have a project aiming to reduce EXO’s worth, f**k; I’m frustrated because of multiple things ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Because of Gaon’s double standards, part of EXO’s album sales scores were completely freaking ignored by other fandoms ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ EXO’s album sales were ignored ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ” [+11[+117][-0]

“The reason why EXO’s worth is so high is because it’s a normal occurrence that whatever clothes they wear, whatever cologne they use, the food they eat, the shoes they wear, the hats they put on, all of it becomes sold out.
After EXO modeled for Goobne, if you pile together all the chicken box sets they sold over 11 months it would multiple tens of times taller than the tallest mountain in Korea. Anything EXO wears, eats, advertises for without a doubt becomes sold out….
The luxury one piece that Baekhyun wore in a concert VCR became sold out; the clothes, bags, hats EXO wore because sold out in a day; when they advertised for WorldCone it became the #1 ice cream seller; Baskin Robbins sales 9% increase; Crunky Chocolate Bars 8308% dramatic increase; After modelling for Nature Republic, in 2013 they experienced a 33.7% increase with ₩171,700,000,000 in sales, in 2014 they had a 48.6% increase with ₩255,200,000,000 in sales (this turned the business’s deficit into profit). EXO’s potential economic worth is estimated to be ₩1,000,000,000,000.
Furthermore, the perfume they gave out by lottery at Chanyeol’s birthday party was worth ₩100,000-200,000 and after the birthday party once the perfume’s product information went up it sold out within an hour or two. A baseball hat that Chen wore also sold out almost instantly, which made the names “GODxo” and “GODxo girls” become a thing in certain communities” [+10[+104][-1]
